National Financial Capability Challenge results

Seal of the President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy

By Mrs. Sheryl Kirby

I am very proud to announce that GWHS students Amanda Donlen and Johnny Navarro, juniors in my Accounting class, scored in the top 20% of more than 84,000 students across the nation who participated in the U. S. Department of the Treasury’s National Financial Capability Challenge.

With an average nationwide score of 69% on the challenge, the Treasury Department states, “The results reinforce our belief that there is more work to be done to prepare our young people for the financial future that awaits them.”   Despite this relatively low nationwide average, eight of our Accounting students scored higher than 69%!

Amanda and Johnny now have a chance to win one of  five $1,000 scholarships for students who scored in the top 10% among all students who attend low-income public schools, with another $1,000 grant from a foundation being awarded to our school if they win. All scholarship winners will be announced by April 23, 2011, so please join me in congratulating them on their accomplishment and wishing them good luck in the scholarship opportunity!
