GWHS Principal wins award!

Congratulations to our Principal, Kathy Pizzimenti-Murphy, who just received the Rose Lindenbaum Improvement of Education Award for 2012!

Rose Lindenbaum, a former District teacher, endowed a trust fund with $100,000 so that teachers could be honored annually for excellence in the classroom, and principals are now recognized for excellence, as well.

The staff and students are very proud!

Journalism Club attends celebration at NCC

By Preston Johns and Sandybel Cedeno, Class of 2013

On May 16, 2012 we and our fellow classmates, staff members of The Eagle Eye, took part in the Philadelphia Prime Movers’ Media 6th Annual Year-End Awards Celebration at The National Constitution Center.   Upon arrival, the student MC was not in attendance so our fellow classmate, Rochell Henry, kindly stepped up and took the position with grace and was a natural.  It was like she was meant to speak on stage and she made the school proud!  She did a wonderful job and hopefully can be up there again next year.

Rochell Henry, student MC

It was an amazing time where we got to hear from great speakers such as bestselling author Solomon Jones.   Jones spoke to us about how the brightest of people can make the worst mistakes.  Jones’ speech was extremely motivating.  We learned a great lesson about life and how to handle things.

Another one of our classmates, Max Carrero, was a student speaker who shared his reflections about his work on The Eagle Eye.  He captivated the entire audience with his rendition of the song from Reading Rainbow and had everyone singing with him before he thanked Mrs. Kirby and the Prime Movers’ founders for the journalism program.

We also heard from Acel Moore and Dorothy Gilliam, Prime Movers’ founders, and we witnessed some of the wonderful writers get awards for what they wrote in their school’s newspapers or on their school’s websites.  Congratulations to our classmate Paige Hughes who was awarded Best Online Presence for her poetry on our site.  Congratulations to Mrs. Kirby, too, who was awarded Advisor of the Year!

After  enjoying a slide show of pictures from different schools and listening to the wonderful speeches and inspirational stories, we were able to sit down and socialize with people from different schools and see what they were up to and doing.  We look forward to participating again as seniors next year.
