Bad Seed Rising

Bad Seed Rising

By Mark Stanislavov, Class of 2014

Today, May 9, 2014, was an amazing experience!  The band  Bad Seed Rising came to George Washington High School and rocked the house!  Louey, Fran, Aiden, and Mason really showed what they’ve got.   I was blown away by their CD Charm City, but now that I have seen them live, I LOVE them!  It is really difficult to look into social media or watch MTV and see which new bands are on the rise.  Bad Seed Rising really proved to be the best new band that  I’ve heard so far.   In five years I want to see them on the big screen, making platinum hits, and having a ball! Fran, Louey, Mason, and Aiden are the future of the Rock genre.

Being a massive fan of Rock music, I have to thank them for keeping the feel and rhythm of Rock music alive and kicking! I didn’t expect much from a bunch of kids from Baltimore, Maryland, but after listening to their album and hearing them live, I was sincerely blown away.  I can really hear the influences in their music.  I can hear Aerosmith, AC/DC, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Def Leppard and so many other rock legends emanating from the group’s spirits.  Just by the solos performed by Mason, the lead guitarist of the group, I can hear what legendary rock bands influenced them.

The one song that I can’t seem to stop listening to is Wolves at the Door. The song really has all the high voltage of the past with the electric power of today! The song Bad Seed Rising shows that Classic Rock and Rock in general is definitely not dead. The vocal talent, Francheska, really has an amazing set of pipes! She can really hit all of the notes that are needed to sound superb. Louey can really keep the rhythm going with his bass-tastic skills. The drums are fused with drummer Aiden’s, heart and soul.

All I can say is that these kids have so much planned ahead of them and they don’t even know it. Bad Seed Rising has a ton of potential and momentum to boost them through any ceiling. Can’t wait to see where these rockin’ rebels will be in the next five years. I’m excited for them! Keep up the good work guys!!!

B. SMYTH 1000

By Shawn Bantum, Class of 2014
B. Smyth, a new Motown artist,  is from Ft Lauderdale, Florida.   His mom is originally from Florida, and his father is from Jamaica.
Smyth was inspired to sing by his mom because when he was younger, she would always be singing around the house. She even had a band herself when she was younger and music was just always in his blood growing up.  Smyth never was really into singing.  He was like any other teen growing up – he was pretty much just into sports.  He played a lot of football and it wasn’t until the tenth grade that he got into music . Smyth started doing talent shows and really loved it which led him to where he is today.
B. Smyth has come into the music business with his own fresh swagger and has ben doing great with his new release “Leggo” which features Hip Hops very own 2 Chainz.
Not only can B. Smyth sing very well and hit high notes, he also is talented in dancing, so he is a multi-talented guy.  At only 19 years old, I can see Smyth becoming a big star.   “Leggo” has already become very famous and a well known song for teen girls and guys.
His swag and his dance moves are something that everyone can connect with and especially if you’re a dancer.  His fame has been growing tremendously
especially, with the ladies, because of his swag and his music.
The song is a mixture of R & B, Dance and Hip-Hop and the video is very creative.  I see him as a rising star along with all the other young up and coming stars.

Fresh flavor – Trevor Jackson

By Sandybel Cedeno, Class of 2013

Trevor Jackson has come into the music business with his own fresh flavor and has been doing great with his new release “Like We Grown.”    Not only does he have a strong singing voice, he also is talented in acting and dancing so that he has been noted as a “triple threat.”

At only sixteen years old, you can see Trevor forming into a natural star!  His song “Like We Grown” has already become a famous and well-known song for preteen and teen girls and guys.  His style and swag is something that everyone around his age group can connect with and the song resonates with many teens as well.  His fame has been growing dramatically, especially with girls, because of his cute style and face.  The song itself is a good mixture of R & B and hip-hop and the lyrics are very relatable for his fans.  I see him as a natural born star!

The lyrics, “Baby I’ll just love you like we grown tonight,  And we go around like we grown tonight,” are the best parts of the song.  Many teens are in a rush to grow up and this is exactly how they feel when they are in a relationship with someone.  It’s actually my favorite part of the song because it expresses the freedom that adults have of being with and going anywhere with the person they love.  I’m guessing that’s where the title of the song comes from “Like We Grown,” riding around like adults having fun and a good time with their love.   I love this song!

Rachel Farley…Wow!

rachel farley

By Mark Stanislavov, Class of 2014

Never being a huge fan of country, I thought that listening to her would be boring. I was dead wrong! Rachel Farley, born from Southern land, has punched me with a reminder of how much I enjoy country! Her new song, “Ain’t Easy,” woke up the sleeping Southern side of me and I realized how interesting it was to listen to this genre. The way she sings, dare I say it, reminds me of Bobby Mackey. He was a brilliant mind in the genre of country, and Rachel just might be able to reach those heights. She has a blazing bright future ahead of her. Words of advice, stay away from the Crossroads and on the right road Rachel! Amazing song and performance!

Austin Mahone – the next Justin Bieber?

By Mark Stanislavov, Class of 2014

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Singer Austin Mahone just might be the second coming of Justin Bieber. This young new talent has much to offer with only being sixteen posting videos on YouTube to signing with his first record company. Austin’s newest song, “Say You’re Just a Friend (ft. Flo Rida)” shows that this sixteen year old has the mind of a musical genius with understanding the way teenagers really go through the trials of whether or not their friend can be more than a friend. In the video, Austin shows off his dance moves and his award winning smile to dazzle the audience while at the same time, telling a story of a teenage boy who is in love with his friend, dare say best friend, and is afraid to ask her to be more than a friend to him in the assumption that it will ruin their friendship entirely. Flo Rida makes an appearance with spitting a few words of fire to let the song have a little more zest to it. What I can gather from what Flo Rida is trying to explain is how he spent most of his time in Carol City, created a song, and fell in love with a girl who broke his heart. That is just what I can sum up, if someone else can get a different story from Flo Rida’s part, please share it. All in all, Austin Mahone has a bright and powerful future in the music business. He shows that starting small can lead to something wonderful and marvelous.

Thank you for reading my review, have an exquisite day!

Sean Forbes in concert at GWHS

IMG_0726 IMG_0789

By Scott Siley, Jenna Vaugn and Bridget Sullivan, Class of 2014

Sean Forbes is a 31 year old deaf rapper from Detroit. Sean wasn’t born deaf; when he was one he got a very high fever that blew out his ear drums and he hasn’t been able to hear since. He recently performed in our school and we had an opportunity to interview him as part of our Sports & Entertainment Marketing Program.

We asked him, “were there any difficulties growing up deaf” he responded by saying that sports were very difficult for him because he didn’t know when to start and stop playing.  He told us that he “loved music since he was a little kid.” He started playing the drums when he was young and was inspired to be a drummer when he got older. When he got older, he figured out if he was going to go anywhere with his music career then he would have to sing.  In 2006, his dream of being a musician came true upon singing a record with the Bass Brothers who were discovered by Eminem in Detroit. His band has recorded 50 songs and they are looking forward to releasing their first album on April 2nd called “Perfect Imperfection.”

Taylor Swift is literally taking over the world becoming one of the biggest stars in the music  industry. She has a number one single “We Are Never Getting Back Together” and a number one album Red to go along with it.

Taylor Swift is the only female to have two consecutive albums sell over a million copies in their opening week.  Taylor Swift is the voice  of the young people. And she’s making her mark in the world. She has sold over 23 million albums and 54.5 million song downloads worldwide. She is competing with the best of artists and she is only 22 years of age. Midsummer Station Review

by Joy Levine, Class of 2013

In one word I would say the album Midsummer Station is pleasant.   The albums’ songs bear a striking resemblance to the song of the previous album called Ocean Eyes. This album features artists such as Mark Hoppus and Carly Rae Jensen. Adam Young’s musical style is eclectic and varied. The album is one of those fun energetic types of records that you just feel happy listening to.

I would recommend it for audiences aged12-14; it’s a good album for that age range. Overall, the new Owl City album Midsummer Station was very fun in my opinion. I definitely would suggest anyone who hasn’t heard it yet to give it a listen.
