Time to Say Goodbye

By Paige Hughes, Class of 2014

This time was our second try

But now it is time to say goodbye

We’ve laughed and I’ve cried

But now it is time for us to go on separate roller coaster rides

I know it hasn’t been long

I am sorry, but this isn’t where I belong

Just please don’t forget to be strong

He is toxic

This toxin is like a bad drug that will have me locked away forever

He took me away and put me in prison

He put chains on me that won’t allow me to breathe

The chains grow tighter and tighter

It’s becoming more of a struggle to breath

I need to try and break free

Or he will have me as his prisoner forever

He keeps me locked away with his chains and his wicked ways

When will he let me breathe?

I want to be able to breathe

I want to be like a free bird flying over the seas

Can’t he see what he’s doing to me?

I lay awake in my cell

Wondering what I have done to be here

What have I done that was so wrong

The toxin comes around and smashes my lungs with more chains

Each breath is now a struggle for survival

Engineering Math Challenge

By Mikhail Zolonitsky, Advisor

On November 20th, 8 of our students participated in the Philadelphia Engineering Math Challenge at Drexel University. Our team consisted of: Meiling Chen, Maisa Hamdan, Elizaveta Ibeme, Aleks Polyak, Ryan Wright, Eugene Yakovlev, Vitaliy Yurchenko, and Yifan Zhang.

In the first set of the competition when the students were expected to demonstrate the solution of the real-world application problem assigned prior to the event, Eugene Yakovlev and Vitaliy Yurchenko did an outstanding job of solving and presenting their solution. Their determination in preparing and perfecting the task deserves the highest degree of commendation.

In the meantime, the rest of the team headed by our Captain Alex Polyak easily won the Engineering Event that required mastery of Geometry, Trigonometry, and Physics. It was a great pleasure to watch our guys enthusiastically setting up the experiments involving optical devices and navigating through complicated mathematical concepts.

In the Quiz bowl our team came in second.

We are looking forward to 3 more competitions this year.

Math Competition

math pic

By Mikail Zolotnitsky, Math Teacher

On  April22nd,  GWHS and a team of Catholic High Schools from Philadelphia and suburbs resumed a tradition of Annual Math competitions. In the past, GWHS used to win every year, however in more recent history, Catholic schools took the lead.  We did not win on the 22nd, but we plan to take revenge next year.

Many of the students from our GWHS team starting in the Fall stayed after school every Monday and solved advance problems. On the day of the competition, scores were counted for individual and team students’ performance.  Liu Zhouhai had the best score on our team. The entire event was fun for everybody and nobody wanted to leave.

All students who love math are invited to join our Math Club next year. Please, let Mrs. Gallagher (Rm 318) know if you would like to participate.

B. SMYTH 1000

By Shawn Bantum, Class of 2014
B. Smyth, a new Motown artist,  is from Ft Lauderdale, Florida.   His mom is originally from Florida, and his father is from Jamaica.
Smyth was inspired to sing by his mom because when he was younger, she would always be singing around the house. She even had a band herself when she was younger and music was just always in his blood growing up.  Smyth never was really into singing.  He was like any other teen growing up – he was pretty much just into sports.  He played a lot of football and it wasn’t until the tenth grade that he got into music . Smyth started doing talent shows and really loved it which led him to where he is today.
B. Smyth has come into the music business with his own fresh swagger and has ben doing great with his new release “Leggo” which features Hip Hops very own 2 Chainz.
Not only can B. Smyth sing very well and hit high notes, he also is talented in dancing, so he is a multi-talented guy.  At only 19 years old, I can see Smyth becoming a big star.   “Leggo” has already become very famous and a well known song for teen girls and guys.
His swag and his dance moves are something that everyone can connect with and especially if you’re a dancer.  His fame has been growing tremendously
especially, with the ladies, because of his swag and his music.
The song is a mixture of R & B, Dance and Hip-Hop and the video is very creative.  I see him as a rising star along with all the other young up and coming stars.

Nothing can conquer you

By Paige Hughes, Class of 2014
Nothing can conquer you.
Nothing can stop you.
Don’t let them throw you down to the ground
Do not let them see you weak
Hold your head up high
Walk with confidence
Nothing can conquer you
Nothing can stop you
Dream like you’ve never dreamt before
Your throne will forever be yours
Head up, shoulders back
Take the world and conquer it
You are the ruler of your reality
