Jacob Tucker – slam dunk champ

By Ryan Smith, Class of 2014

I recently read an article about a college athlete named Jacob Tucker who rose to fame from his many YouTube videos.  He was a student at Illinois College, a small college with a little over 1,000 students.   At 5’10” being able to dunk is no easy feat.  He has recorded a 50” vertical leap.  He participated in the NCAA Slam Dunk Contest on Final Four weekend.  But because he doesn’t play against the larger name universities such as Kentucky, Ohio State, or even Butler, according to author Stuart Feil, “…his candidacy needed a push.”   His YouTube videos display his outstanding hops and Jacob doing windmill, 360, and even jumping over a teammate to dunk the ball through the hoop. His video has almost 5 million views and this catapulted him into the contest.   Jacob took home the slam dunk trophy and he is now a part of the Harlem Globetrotters.   This article is a display of how hard work can get you anywhere and you’re never too small to reach your dreams.

This article caught my eye not only because it is about basketball, but because I myself have seen many people quit chasing their dreams because they were “too small” or “not good enough.”   This article is a display of how a young college athlete didn’t listen to all of the criticism regarding his lack of height and continued to work hard to be the best he could be.   A 50” vertical leap takes years of work to gain. That’s a lot of leg presses, calf raises, and working on your legs. This relates to our class because our teacher (Mrs. Kirby) constantly preaches that we can achieve our dreams with a little hard work and dedication. This applies to my life because I try to work as hard as I possibly can to be the best basketball player and the best person I can be.

G-dub basketball team holds their own

By Jamel Williams, Class of 2013

This past Friday, February 1st, George Washington’s Varsity basketball team took a long journey to Atlantic City to play in the Atlantic City Showcase. While on the bus, the team was very anxious and excited to finally go on a small vacation though we were going for business as well.

When they arrived at their hotel, the team got their key cards and settled down in their rooms and relaxed until it was time to leave for their game.  Around 4:30 P.M., the bus arrived to take them to their 6:00 P.M. game against Holy Spirit High School from Camden, New Jersey.  When the teams arrived at the gym in the Atlantic City High School, they were pumped and ready to go.

As our team came out for warm ups, they looked at their opponents and saw that they were a lot bigger and stronger than them, but that didn’t stop their heart and courage. Washington still believed that they had a great chance to win.  It was tip off time and Washington High School came out to a flat and slow start. Instead of them playing at the pace they wanted, they let Holy Spirit High control the tempo of the game.   Going into half time, the Eagles were down by 22 points.

In the locker room, the Eagles became frustrated with each other and began to put their heads down, but star player and captain, Kendale Truitt, raised their hopes and put confidence in their hearts. The team came out in the second half being aggressive and had a lot more fight in them even though they were smaller. The Eagles cut the big lead within 15 points at the end of the 3rd quarter. Coming out into the 4th quarter, the Eagles came out strong and finished strong, but still ended up losing by 10 points with the final score being 64-54. Everyone was upset with the loss, but the coaches and players were happy with the fact that the College scouts and others respected that the Eagles didn’t give up and they gave the Holy Spirit basketball team a hard fight. In the end, the Eagles still looked like winners in the spectators’ eyes for their effort and for playing hard until the 4th quarter came to a close.

GEORGE WASHINGTON RAILROADS OVER FITZSIMONS

By Robin Thomas, Class of 2012

Washington railroaded over Fitzsimons High School 61-38 in  a recent basketball game at GWHS. The assault was led by senior guard Rashid Jackson and junior guard Cody Marx.  Jackson and Marx combined for a total of 32 points.

Although Jackson and Marx ran the show, it was Adonis Fountain who entertained the crowd when he dunked in spectacular fashion. In the second half, Cody Marx took the ball down court with no defenders in sight, passed it backwards to Adonis Fountain who went on to dunk and electrify the crowd. Fountain finished off with a total of 13 points. Steve Hall showed great ball handle and finished off with 9 points. Frank Shannon had 3 points. Wayne McNeely and Jamel Williams both had 2 points. Although Anthony Matthis didn’t score, he played a key role in the paint and was an exceptional rebounder and defender.

Fitzsimons’ Isaac McBride did his best to compete with the Eagles scoring 17 points, but didn’t receive much help from his team and couldn’t do it all on his own. Basically it was a 5 on 1 assault on Fitzsimons, which is spectacular since the Eagles lost key players due to disciplinary reasons.
