New National Academic League at GWHS
“The National Academic League © motivates and recognizes academic athletes much like their athletic peers. By successfully combining the important aspects of team sports — such as competitiveness, strategy, teamwork and cooperation in a group effort — with important aspects of learning — such as problem solving, critical thinking and scholarship — the NAL © generates the same popular enthusiasm and pride as do sports teams. It’s cool to be smart!”
Under their coach, Mrs. Andrea Seitchik, the First GWHS NAL Team competed this school year. The team is comprised of students in grades 9-12. Games were played against Northeast High School, Douglas High School and Martin Luther King High School. Each team competed against each other twice. Our final standings in the Gold Region was 5-1. We continued on to the City-Wide finals reaching 4thplace. Quite an accomplishment for a 1st year team.
NFTE/FBLA SHOPPING TRIP TO NYC!!!!
“March Winds 2010 in NYC with NFTE and FBLA”
By Mrs. Mary Falkenstein
On March 16th, NFTE and FBLA students took their annual trip to New York City to the wholesale shopping district and it was a huge success! We had lunch with Mr. Steve Marriotti, founder of NFTE, and sat in his big conference room. Many of his staff members visited us and they treated us to lunch. NFTE loaned us $50 each to start our own businesses and guided us to make smart decisions. Mr. Marriotti taught us a lesson on the Economics of One Unit and Return on Investment. Although Mrs. Falkenstein teaches this all the time, it sure sounded better coming from Mr. Marriotti.

Two sophomores honored by Phillies Explorers Program
CONGRATULATIONS to sophomores Eric Smith and Michael Tuller, who will be honored during a pre-game event at the May 5 Phillies game at 7:05 p.m. for the three months of work they completed in the Phillies Explorer Program.
They will be meeting Phillies players on the field before the game, and receive certificates for their perfect attendance and participation in the program.
The Phillies Explorers program was offered to students in our Sports & Entertainment Marketing class, because it offered a real world connection to the material covered in class. Eric and Michael learned about careers in sports marketing and what the Phillies organization does outside of the actual game of baseball.
What is your collection?
My name is Michael and I collect models to put them around my room. I collect Gundam, planes, and Zoids models. My first model was a Gundam. I had Wing Zero Gundam as a model and built it with my dad’s help. Since then I have been building models on my own.
I was eight years old when I first built it — the shield was red and white, and the body was white, blue red and yellow. The yellow was on the head and wings but my favorite was Wing Zero Gundam Custom. The reason why is that Wing Zero Gundam Custom has angel wings. The second Gundam model I got was Burning Gundam.
Burning Gundam is a stronger version of Shining Gundam.
